The early central files are folded into thirds, reflecting the original filing system of the NTS. Since constant unfolding and refolding by researchers would permanently damage the documents, NHC Archivists must unfold every document while arranging them in chronological order. This is one year sorted into months, ready for light conservation, arranged by date, and folded flat.
