As each item is unfolded, original papers fasteners are removed including paperclips, staples and brads. Some of the late 19th century paperclips are quite elegant! The papers were at one time held together with rubber bands. A large majority of the documents have remnants of the decayed bands, that Archivists scrape off with a metal micro-spatula.
