The Naval War College (NWC) Review, begun in 1948, has regularly featured painted covers depicting scenes from famous (and infamous) naval engagements or historical instances involving the U.S. Navy. In January 1968, after a run of covers featuring full-color photographs, the first painted image first appeared: a portrait of Rear Admiral Stephen Bleeker Luce, U.S. Navy who, in the rank of Commodore, was the first President of the Naval War College, 6 October 1684 to 22 June 1886.
The covers in this gallery represent some of the finest examples of painted combat imagery and have become standards on NWC Review covers.
