Abstract
Because of the political division of Europe into two opposing military power blocs-the continental Soviet bloc consisting of the Warsaw Pact nations and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization consisting of 14 maritime nations of the West-the Federal Republic of Germany, as a member of NATO, has coupled her destiny very closely to that of the leading seapower of the Western World.
