Abstract
Forty years ago President Harry Truman enunciated his famous Truman Doctrine-with its implied promise of aid to any country that was threatened by Soviet-supported revolution. Today a number of thoughtful Americans of various political persuasions believe that the United States is overcommitted to the world in terms of our willingness to uphold all the mutual security obligations undertaken since 1947 in the name of ''containing communism."
