Abstract
On the night of 8 February 1904, ten Japanese destroyers set out for Port Arthur, the Russian naval base at the tip of Manchuria's Liaotung Peninsula. Although war had not yet been declared, the destroyers launched their torpedoes at the unsuspecting Russian fleet anchored in the roadstead just outside the harbor.
