Naval War College Review
Abstract
The current phase in east-west détente has had a fundamental effect on the Western alliance. Nato's institutional structure, basic strategy, and doctrinal concepts have been or are currently under review, and for good reason. After all, it is clear that future security challenges to the Western alliance, even in the form of a future hypothetical Soviet/Russian threat, will be faced under completely different political circumstances and geopolitical conditions.
