Abstract
What I shall try to do this morning is: first, to call attention to certain features of the Russian background which are important for an understanding of Bolshevism today; second, review the origins of Bolshevism; third, consider the character of the seizure of power in 1917; fourth, see the way in which the Bolsheviks consolidated their power; then, fifth, I should like to examine the nature of the new Communist elite; sixth, look at the main stages in the development of the Soviet economy and Soviet economic strength ; and, finally, analyze the nature of tensions and controls in the Soviet system.
