Naval War College Review
Abstract
It’s not just what you know but whom you know. Among the great pleasures of life are the friends and characters you meet along the way. But even the most worldly and traveled individuals are limited in their ability to come to know the humble, the near-great, and the great personalities of their age. They can, however, vicari- ously meet personalities from today, and from history, through the power of the written word. Hundreds of colorful characters inhabit the books of the CNO’s Professional Reading Program. The paragraphs that follow provide a glimpse of some of them.
