A mixed media illustration showing Lt. Matthew Fontaine Maury, USN, who was Superintendent (1842-1861) of the Depot of Charts and Instruments, the forerunner of the present Naval Oceanographic Office. Other parts of the illustration show the depot as it appeared from 1844-1866 in its Washington, D.C., location and the seal of the depot in the 19th century. The illustration was done by Richard H. Moody, head of technical presentations for the OceanÂographer of the Navy.
