Naval War College Review
Volume 69, Number 3 (2016) Summer 2016
Escorts and merchant ships at Hvalfjord, Iceland, before the sailing of Convoy PQ17 for the north Russian ports of Murmansk and Archangelsk. Behind the destroyer Icarus (1.03) is the Russian tanker Azerbaijan. In this issue, author Milan Vego explains how Convoy PQ17 was decimated by U-boats and the Luftwaffe after communications from the Admiralty in July 1942 withdrew most of the escorts and ordered the convoy to 'scatter.'
