Naval War College Review
Volume 76, Number 2 (2023) Spring 2023
U.S. Marine Corps M777 155 mm howitzers are staged on the flight line prior to being loaded into a U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircraft at March Air Reserve Base, California, in April 2022. The howitzers are part of efforts by the United States, alongside allies and partners, to identify Ukraine’s needs and provide it with additional capabilities. In “‘Confining the Enemy’: Halford Mackinder’s Theory of Containment and the Conflict in Ukraine,” authors Michael Hochberg and Leonard Hochberg demonstrate how Mackinder’s containment theory provides a useful geostrategic assessment of the 2022–23 Ukraine crisis, and analyze current applications of his writings and theory to the U.S. commitment to Ukraine.
